* SECOND EDITION - RELEASED JULY 2015 *

I should never have jumped that fence, and I most definitely should never have kissed her.

Living on the streets, I had to make some hard decisions to stay alive. I signed a contract with the devil, and because of that, I choose to live alone.

But after listening to my neighbors fight every night for years, it’s finally gotten to me. Now I’ve gone and done it - I’ve broken my only rule—never get involved.

I want to save the beautiful woman next door with the sad eyes from his abuse. I want to take her away from all of this, but what do I have to offer when my hands are stained with the sins I’ve committed?

How can I offer a broken woman peace and safety when those two things don’t exist in my world?

I got hooked by reading the sample of this book. Trust me when I say it was the best part! This whole book was just depressing and finding the thread of love or romance was hard if not impossible.
This is the story about an abusive man (Dylan) who beats his wife. A wife (Jane) who is filled with self loathing and has been made week due to years of abuse. She is saved by her neighbour (Malice) who turns out to have a sad past of his own and is now a criminal version of a bounty hunter.
The makings of a good story? Possibly, but that's not what happens.
This turns out to be a story of two weak people who want the easy way out of where their lives have left them. Jane blames everyone for not seeing that she needs help and not saving her from her husband and although she admits the fault in her thinking she doesn't change anything above her situation. Her inner dialogue acknowledges that she needs to make a change and even rebels against her husband in her mind with snarky comments and the finger behind his back but I think this was just a ploy by the author to stop you from hating this character.
Malice does the noble thing and helps her get out, but really has no depth, he has watched her get beat up for months and has been falling for her. He intercedes one night and then leaves her in hell for a few more weeks, if broken ribs hadn't forced her to his door would he ever have done anything to help her?
Then there's just pages and pages of them winding each other up and going around in circles saying the same things over and over again. I don't deserve her, I don't deserve him, I hate myself, I'm worthless. I'm lying to her but why won't she give her self to me and trust me. He's lying to me and I just came from a relationship full of lies but I want him. I told him he was no better than my violent husband. He told me he loved me and in the next breath said we couldn't be together. A few hours after that conversation everything changes again.
Even though she almost dies from a "accidental" drug overdose - after just intimating that she should end her life - Malice saves her again and reveals that the gangsters he works for are a possible danger to her life! (Great thanks for saving me and letting me know that; not only do I have my psychotic husband and my own self loathing to worry about, I can now add the prospect of some drug lord watching me to make sure he doesn't have to put a hit on me.)

But that's okay, although she has just had her stomach pumped and is still recovering from 2 broken ribs all she wants is for him to have rough sex with her that involves her feet being up by her ears.

Not possible! I have had a fractured rib and a month into recovery it was still painful to take a deep breath let alone contort my self for a hot and heavy session! It was just completely unrealistic that they would end up having any kind of sex after living the past 24 hours they had lived. It was beyond understanding that they were together, a beaten and soul broken women trusting a complete stranger to the point that she ends up living with him and within a week she's is kissing and starting a relationship with him!

And somehow in this cluster, 2 people get murdered with no conclusion or consequences regarding either death. What the f***!

I was lost by the end of the book, the whole thing just pissed me off. I can't believe I kept reading it, more fool me!

Overall Assessment
I liked it. It was steamy read, but deals with issues such as abuse which added depth.

What I liked
-I loved Jane in this book. The first few paragraphs is what really drew me in. The realness of Jane’s emotions was fantastic.
-and that cover though!

What I didn’t
– I just couldn’t get a connection to Malice. I WANTED to so bad😦
-I’m not sure if I will continue the series, I was looking forward to reading about Ty or Bronx-I know their books come later. I may come back to it, but it’s not a series I’m chomping at to continue.

Jane's been in an abusive marriage for years. The perfect wife serving her husband and taking a hit when he wants it, she knows this is a bad situation and yet she says she's too weak to do anything about it. One night David, the abusive husband takes it with her dog, she doesn't have children so the dog is her life and she feels the instinct to protect it yet she can't; that's where the neighbor appear, she doesn't seem to recognize him and yet he saves the dog and saves her for that night.

Malice has been hearing her screams and sobs for way too long and yet he always hesitated doing stepping up, how could he help somebody when he can't help himself? As a hit man, he knows violence and knows when to not stick your nose and yet he's too fascinated by the weak attractive woman who can't leave her husband. That night he makes the decision to help her and that changes everything for them.

I didn't like this 'cause I felt this didn't explore their feelings enough, the ingredients to make a great angtsy booth were there but the author didn't use it that well. They are both broken by life and by making it all flowers and rainbow, it disappointed me.

Also the end was too rush, out of the blue and left too many questions so... no.
Told from dual points of view, the main characters, Malice and Jane, seethe with angst. Jane's turmoil comes from years of domestic abuse. Totally understandable. Henry writes despair like she's been there. In fact, it seems as though Jane grows out of her fear too quickly. Malice does his best to be the steady man she needs, but his work damages him, puts him in a dark place. He's not scared, he's depressed. Logically, these two should implode from the heavy weight of their combined emotional trauma. Henry makes it work, with Jane having the strength Malice needs and vice versa.

My gripe with the book concerns the editing, which leaves a bit to be desired, and the grammatical errors that any good copy editor could catch. There are the usual culprits unnecessary apostrophes, incorrect pronoun usage, occasional words used incorrectly, missing words, and incorrect or missing punctuation.

The compositional errors cost this book a star; otherwise, I would give it four stars for a good story well written. It's good, not great, not one I will read again, but I don't regret the time spent reading it. If you're looking for a recommendation, go ahead and indulge, especially if you like books wallowing in angst.
